RESEARCH PROGRAMME

The international Summer School "Migration Flows, Sustainable Development and Neighbourhood Policy in the New EU Countries" gives an opportunity to the young researchers from the leading universities of EU, Eastern and Neighbourhood countries to make an international level public presentation of their research papers.

According to our research project, one of our main objectives is to formulate a proposal for an optimal immigration policy and integration policy within the EU.
Even though each Member State has its unique approach to managing migration and fostering integration according to its history, culture and economic development, the EU must develop a common, coherent framework for immigration and integration policy with clear principles and objectives.

The common integration policy should be supported both by European government and people and should ensure transparency, as well as build trust between native and immigrant. At a time of growing resistance to migration in many receiving countries, effective policies aimed at socioeconomic inclusion of migrants in their host communities can generate immediate and longer term benefits for all actors involved. That means that immigration can’t leave aside from integration.
For these reasons it is particularly important to involve also the sending countries in the study of migration phenomena and in the elaboration of an effective EU-wide migration policy, in order to study migration flows and consequences from both points of view.

The research programme involves three institutions: University of Genoa, Department of Economic and Financial Sciences; University of Sofia, Bulgarian European community Studies Association; Babes- Bolyai University, Romanian Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. Every team has a different task and it will be able to work in autonomy after the preliminary stage and the definition of each team programme. The Genoa team will ensure the coordination of the research programme all over the project duration, in order to analyse the research issues in all its elements and to gather the proposal of every team.
